Scouting this week is critical!
I would strongly recommend that growers and agents carefully scout
their crop this week for a variety of possible problems. I have listed
the main problems seen in NC at this time in April and have attached
website color photos to see these pesst and symptoms Agents - please
look at these photos before making field visits.
-1. mites

-1a. Mite control suggestions:

-2. clipper damage
http://www.hort.cornell.edu/department/faculty/pritts/BerryDoc/strawberry/flowersandfruit/Clipper2.htm
-2a. Clipper control: This is now more difficult as Lorsban cannot
be used after first blossoms. Contact Dr. Ken Sorensen for advice on
best strategy if you have this problem, 919.515.1662, kenneth_sorensen@ncsu.edu;
p.302 NC Ag Chem Manual lists 2 other materials for clipper control
besides Lorsban Sevin and Marlate. SINCE WE ARE WIDE OPEN TODAY WITH
HONEY BEES AND POLLINATION, here is information on issues related to
carbaryl (Sevin) and methoxychlor (Marlate) toxicity to Honey Bees
(note that carbaryl can be highly toxic; Marlate falls into Group 2
Moderately Toxic).

-2b. Activity of Brigade on Strawberry Clipper?
http://www.cdms.net/ldat/ld318006.pdf - go to p 3 of specimen label
-3. Issue: toxicity of Brigade and Danitol to Honey Bees?
Que. Barclay Poling wrote to Ken (Sorensen), “Can you go to this
site (above) and let me know if bifenthrin (Brigade) and fenpropathrin
(Danitol) are category I in toxicity to honey bees/”
Ans. Not all insecticides have been screened. Pyrethroid insecticides
are Cat 1 unless listed on the label as to category. Brigade and Danitol
are pyrethroids.
Check the label and inquire with company and distributor for updates.
-4. anthracnose on blossom picture on the web
http://intra.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/berrydoc/march25_03/index.htm
-4a. Anthracnose spray program: (starts at 10% bloom see schedule 3,
at Clayton we are applying our 2nd weekly anthracnose spray this Friday,
April 11)
http://intra.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/berrydoc/march25_1_03.htm
-4c. Comments from BASF on Cabrio:
http://intra.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/berrydoc/mar19_03.htm
-4d. Note from Dr. Mike Ellis, OSU, Plant Path, 4/3/03. Background:
I was able to share with Dr. Ellis, who spoke on the Ohio Berry Workshop
program last week, the note from Alabama and agent Dan Porch about
the confirmed case of anthracnose (see http://intra.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/berrydoc/march25_03/index.htm):
(From Agent in Alabama)
Dr. Poling,
The disease is Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, anthracnose fruit rot
(was diagnosed). I
know Jimmy Witt has been in touch with you and has kept you up to date
on what is going on. 3 infected fields, two in this county and one
tothe east of here. Total acreage is about 8 or 9 acres. None in Sweet
Charlie(yet), mostly Camarosa.
Dan Porch
County Agent, Blount County
And, this morning, Dr. Ellis had this VIP comment:
“ You may wish to contact that person and
remind them that Cabrio cannot or should not be alternated with Quadris.
Thanks for everything.”
Mike Ellis, OSU
Note from Carl Cantaluppi about Oxford Auction::
I will again be having monthly produce auction meetings until we open
the auction in early July. The meetings will be held at 7 PM at the
Granville County Extension Center, 208 Wall Street in Oxford, on the
following dates:
Monday April 7
Monday May 5
Monday June 2
Topics will include the auction's days of operation, opening day,
post-harvest handling of produce, updates on installation of the
fork-lift truck and refrigerator, the selling of ads for our produce
auction calendar, and anything else that needs to be discussed.
I would urge growers or buyers who would like to participate at the
Oxford Produce Auction to please attend the meetings. They are the
life-blood of the auction and their comments and suggestions are most
welcome. I look forward to having a bigger and better sales year in
2003!
